Resilience and Recovery: Nancy’s Journey Back to Independence
Nancy Mumma’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience. When she arrived at Celebration Villa of York in July 2025, she was profoundly weak after months of immobility. Initially requiring a wheelchair and significant assistance for daily tasks, Nancy worked with Occupational and Physical Therapy to regain her coordination and cognitive focus. Within months, she was walking independently with a rollator and enjoying social outings with friends.
Her determination was truly tested following a subsequent fall and pelvic surgery. Though advised to enter a rehab hospital, Nancy insisted on returning to the Powerback Rehab team she trusted. She returned to the facility back in a wheelchair, facing new challenges with balance and environmental challenges.
Undeterred, Nancy even helped relaunch the facility’s Wii Sports and balance program to sharpen her coordination. Through four months of hard work, she achieved her ultimate goal: Nancy now walks independently with a single-point cane throughout the building and requires no assistive device at all within her room. Her recovery is a triumphant story of reclaiming independence against all odds.
Nancy’s transformation has truly inspired those around her. Her friends often remark on her incredible recovery, and fellow residents frequently stop to cheer her on, amazed to see her walking confidently with her cane.
